Not Your Health Teacher's Sex Ed: Exploring the Clitoris

Updated: Jul 27, 2020

As a sex therapy provider and a clinical sexuality coach I am often surprised to learn that many women and men know little about the clitoris and just how big of a role it can play in sexual pleasure. Often times many see the clitoris as a "small nub" above the urethra that feels good to massage. While yes that feels good, that's just the tip (no pun intended) to the sexual pleasure that the clitoris provides.

The clitoris is the most sensitive erogenous zone for a female. It is the only organ that is made specifically for pleasure. The clitoris is much bigger than what is seen externally (the glans and the hood). The internal portions of the clitoris project into the pelvis, and attaches to the pubic bone. It also extends through and behind the labia, passing by the urethra, vaginal canal, and towards the anus.

Portions of the clitoris can be pleasured internally through the vagina. Portions can also be pleasured by pressing and massaging the mons pubis (the pad of fatty tissue over the pubic bone). It can be pleasured through the anal wall during anal penetration. As noted above, the glans (external pea sized portion of the clitoris) of the clitoris can be pleasured orally or by massaging/rubbing it with a finger, palm, penis, or sex toy.
